Just when you thought the consequences of smoking cigarettes could not get any worse, it turns out that smoking destroys your vision. So on top of cancer, stroke, heart disease and all the rest, now those cigarettes are attacking the way you see the world. Literally. It gets worse, if you smoke around other people, your cigarette smoke is actually putting their vision at risk as well.
There is no doubt that smoking has terrible health consequences across the spectrum. Despite the efforts of regulators to scare people about ecigs with copious misinformation, ecig sales are climbing. Maybe you have seen the Logic Pro ecig commercials on TV. People are turning to vapor because the horrors of smoking are so clear. Research is solidifying the numerous negative consequences of cigarettes.
Just 10 Cigarettes A Day Can Triple Your Risk Of Cataracts
It has been thought that smoking contributes to macular degeneration but new research is showing that the connection is very real. Researchers are also telling us that there is a “strong nexus” of data that indicates cigarette smoking is also a contributing risk factor for glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition where the pressure inside the eye increases and threatens vision.
First macular degeneration or age related macular degeneration, AMD, attacks the retina and affects the very center of your visual field. There are 15 million Americans who struggle with AMD and now we know that that AMD is not just age related but also smoking related according to new smoking research.
Smokers are 4 times more likely than non-smokers to experience macular degeneration. That is a 400% increased risk factor for a degenerative eye disease that can be traced to smoking cigarettes. People who are regularly exposed to second hand smoke are twice as likely to get AMD. So people in your home or workplace that are exposed to second hand smoke become 200% more likely to be diagnosed with macular degeneration.
It gets worse. The connections between smoking and vision connect to cataracts. If you smoke 10 cigarettes a day or more, now this includes half-pack per day people who may consider themselves to be light smokers, just 10 cigarettes a day makes you three times more likely, that’s 300%, to get cataracts. Dehli based opthamologist Dr. Ritika Sachdev says that “First of all, it is important for people to either quit smoking or bring down its consumption. Not just lungs and throat but the eye nerves too get damaged in the entire process.”
The reasons to switch to vaping just keep mounting. The byproducts of combustion are causing immense harm to human health. The more we learn about smoking the worse it gets. Conversely, the most comprehensive research to date shows that vaping is 95% safer than smoking although the ‘special interest’ researchers will never tell you the truth about that. The fact is millions of Americans now vape instead of smoke and that’s the reality. We need smoking alternatives now more than ever. Vaping may not only be saving lives, it may also be saving eyes. If you are a smoker, you have to find a way to quit. There’s no other way to look at it.
