Health officials in the United States have not definitively determined that electronic cigarettes can help smokers quit. Personal testimonials are not accepted as valid by the FDA or most other regulators. Will the FDA ever approve using vaping to quit smoking? We don’t know. Apparently, however, smokers in the UK are not waiting for approval. With the public support of Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians, the electronic cigarette has been recognized as a safer alternative to cigarettes and smokers in the UK have noticed. In the latest study, we now know that more than half of the vapers in the UK have completely quit smoking.

Ash survey in the UK says most smokers quit by vaping

The 2017 Ash Survey in the UK found that there are about 2.9 million vapers. The data shows that 1.5 million of those have completely stopped smoking. No dual use, not occasional cigarette. No, they have completely quit. The survey also showed that fruit flavors are more popular than tobacco flavors. It would seem, based on this, that banning flavors would hinder a reduction in smoking.

Vapers who still smoke

Ann McNeill, a professor of tobacco addiction at King’s College London, said “The message for the 1.3 million vapers who still smoke is that they need to go further and switch completely.” She went on to explain that dual users are still exposing themselves to the harms of smoking.

kings college professor Ann McNeil says vapers who smoke should quit completely

Considering the US loses over 400,000 people to smoking every year, we need to be looking for more quitting smoking options.  Research is ongoing and perhaps American health officials will be able to make an official determination in the near future. Right now vaping in the United States faces impending imposition of harsh regulation that may limit a smokers’ access to vapor products. We have new heads of the FDA and HHS as well as legislation on the table. They vapor industry in the US is basically waiting for their fate to be decided.
