To summarize the results of the study, Dr. Lion Shahab said the following:
Our study adds to existing evidence showing that e-cigarettes and NRT are far safer than smoking, and suggests that there is a very low risk associated with their long-term use.
We’ve shown that the levels of toxic chemicals in the body from e-cigarettes are considerably lower than suggested in previous studies using simulated experiments. This means some doubts about the safety of e-cigarettes may be wrong.
Our results also suggest that while e-cigarettes are not only safer, the amount of nicotine they provide is not noticeably different to conventional cigarettes. This can help people to stop smoking altogether by dealing with their cravings in a safer way.”
The study found that dual users, that is people who use both e-cigs and smoking, do not show the same drastic reduction in exposure to carcinogens than people who switch to vaping entirely and quit smoking.
So if you are a dual user, it is great that you have cut down the cigarettes but keep striving to quit smoking altogether. For vapers that no longer smoke cigarettes, this is great news. Again this was a long-term study and long-term vapers showed little exposure. So little it led researchers to conclude that there is a very low risk associated with long-term electronic cigarette use.
On the heels of this study, vaping advocates are wondering where the tipping point is? The evidence continues to grow. The anti-vaping special interests will maintain their robotic arguments about “we don’t know the long-term” or “it will lead to smoking in children”. When will the pettiness end and anti-vaping people start to realize that the real target here is smoking? Maybe, just maybe, we are starting to get there.
The evidence keeps mounting
Even fanatical anti-vaping stalwart Stanton Glantz has said that he thinks vaping is 30% to 50% as dangerous as smoking. That is a sofetning of his usual position. The growing evidence is even causing Dr. Glantz to admit that vaping is safer than smoking. I don’t think he will become a vaping advocate over night but obviously he realizes that he cannot continue to ignore evidence if he wished to maintain any scientific credibility that he has left. Is Stanton Glantz softening?
So, will this definitive UCL vape study be the tipping point that awakens policy makers and the media to the reality of the benefits of vaping? No. They may soften but tomorrow there will be another anti-vaping study that makes the headlines of every major outlet. The UCL study will not get that level of exposure. You can help by sharing Expert Vaping articles on your Social Media, that way we bypass the mainstream media chaos and fear agenda. The growing evidence helps and eventually it will be impossible to ignore but we are still in a battle to get the truth out there.
