Studies into the health risks of vaping have been gaining traction in recent years. Much of which suggest that e-cigs may be as harmful as smoking in terms of how it effects the body. To clarify, any irritant, stimulant or chemical added to the body that doesn’t naturally produce will have an indeterminate effect.
Like smoking, vaping, drinking coffee, alcohol, eating processed foods or taking medicine, vaping has determined effects. Every exterior influence introduced to the human body has its drawbacks and benefits. Vaping is no different, however, comparing it to smoking as if they are the same thing is not only ignorant, it’s irresponsible.
If you’ve ever seen advertisements for prescription medications on television, they must dedicate the last remaining seconds to quickly list the possible side effects. They rattle off a lengthy list of terrifying side effects that, though they’re not guaranteed, may be a byproduct of taking the medicine. However, doctors prescribe these medications every day for the treatment of ailments.
While vaping is not a medical device, cure, treatment or medication by any means, we should view it similarly. Any peripheral effects of vaping are possible, but not a given outcome. Ailments such as popcorn lung have been proven to be statistically more likely among tobacco smokers than vapers.
It has a great deal to do with what we DO know about tobacco. Smokers continue to consume cigarettes fulling understanding how dangerous and addictive they are, and yet, choosing to use them anyway. Reflexively, vaping has not been studied as closely and much of the dangers that have been publicized are largely based on speculation and theory.
The Health Risks Of Vaping Require More Research
While many of the studies have found that vaping may result in certain lung and heart-related markers often associated with disease, these markers do not directly suggest that the contraction of these conditions will definitely be the result. It’s important to know the risk factors for something as new and unstudied as the long-term effects of vaping. It will take time for any effects to become visible given how new the technology is and how it continues to evolve over time.
Vaping does not replace smoking, it is not a cessation tool as defined by government organizations, it is simply an alternative way to administer nicotine. There are no documented health benefits to using e-cigarettes and in no way, are we equating them with medicine. However, with anything new, the doubts and unknowns are numerous. Studies into health effects are slow to start and the evidence so far inconclusive.
If all of this sounds scary, bear in mind how many people still continue to willingly smoke tobacco with the full knowledge and scientific research as to how toxic they are. Every time you light a cigarette you are accepting that you may be giving yourself cancer on purpose. While vaping isn’t perfect and there is a lot we don’t know, we do understand that many of the additives and harmful carcinogens in cigarettes that cause cancer and diseases are not present in vaping.
Although this isn’t the most reassuring explanation of the health risks of vaping, it’s only fair you understand what the possible ramifications are before you begin using an e-cig. Knowledge is power, and having information puts the control in your hands, not the tobacco companies. You can choose to believe the hype or try vaping for yourself.
